The striker-fired, 8+1 round M&P Shield 9mm is a scaled-down, single-stack version of the full-size M&P9 specifically designed for concealed carry. Winner of a 2012 Editors’ Choice Award, it measures 6.1" L x .95" W x 4.6" H, with an empty weight of only 19 oz. It comes with one flush-fit 7-round magazine that lets you wrap two fingers around the grip frame, plus an 8-round magazine with extended floor plate that permits a full, three-finger grip.
The polymer frame lacks the interchangeable back straps and light rail of the M&P9, but otherwise is quite similar. The slide and 3.1-inch barrel are machined from stainless steel and finished in black Melonite. The slide features scalloped serrations at the rear, a loaded chamber indicator, and is fitted with low-profile, dovetailed, 3-dot sights, with the rear being drift adjustable for windage. Controls consist of a take-down lever, slide release, magazine release and manual safety, all positioned on the left side of the frame in the same locations as found on the M&P9. There is no mag drop safety, but the pistol does include the same articulated trigger safety, internal drop safety and external manual safety found on the M&P9.
