Each rifle was previously equipped with 15-inch rail systems based on our personal preferences. One of the benefits of a longer rail is that you can run your support hand further out on the rail, providing greater distance between the handholds. Further out means more recoil control and stability. When shooting up close I can muscle the weapon, due to my longer arms, as the longer rail gives me more leverage over the rifle. A longer rail also allows more freedom of accessory placement, completely encases the barrel to protect it from damage and alleviates potential accuracy issues while shooting from unconventional positions or while using barricades for stability.

When the UPS man delivered our rifles, we couldn’t wait to open the boxes and see how they came out. In a word, they were absolutely striking. Then we set about equipping our freshly finished carbines with a variety of battle-proven components and accessories from Magpul. These carbines are going to get used and abused, so we wanted parts and components we knew we could trust, and outfitting them with Magpul stuff was a no-brainer.

MBUS

Magpul’s excellent MBUS (Magpul Back-Up Sights) are cost effective, low profile, folding, back-up sights that securely attach to any Picatinny receiver or handguard top rails. Like most of Magpul’s line-up, the MBUS front ($39.95) and rear ($57.95) sights are designed for abuse and are available in a wide variety of colors.

MOE+

We are HUGE fans of Magpul’s MOE grips, and every single one of my ARs has one installed. Their grip angle, design and value are tough to argue against. The MOE+ ($23.95) combines reinforced polymer with a comfortable wrap-around rubber overmolding for maximum weapon control in adverse environments. Like most Magpul grips, the MOE+ will accept optional storage cores for batteries, spare parts, etc.

Our Samson Evolution (top) and Troy TRX Extreme Battle Rail were also colormatched in Poly T2. Barrel’s and muzzle devices were treated to Robar’s matteblack Roguard coating.

BAD Lever

The BAD (Battery Assist Device) lever is designed to considerably improve the speed and efficiency of the AR-15 bolt catch. It improves reloading and malfunction clearance (both of which are shortcomings of the AR platform) by extending a paddle down the right side of the lower receiver and into the trigger guard, allowing manipulation of the bolt release with the right-hand trig-ger finger. This allows the shooter to keep his firing hand where it belongs: on the pistol grip. The BAD Lever ($29.95) is machined from Mil-Spec anodized aluminum and installs without permanent modification to the host weapon. The lever also allows traditional bolt release manipulation.

PMAG 40 GEN M3

High-wear components were coated in Robar’s electroless nickel-based NP3 coating. NP3 features a Teflon additive for lubricity, and the more it wears, the slicker it becomes.

Magpul just released their PMAG 40 GEN M3 ($19.95) for AR/M4 series rifles. This new 40-round magazine maintains the same reliability and enhanced features as the PMAG 30 GEN M3, but allows 10 additional rounds with only about 2.5 inches of extra length over the PMAG 30 GEN M3. Let the gun grabbers be warned: Every time they try to piss all over the 2nd Amendment, Magpul will introduces a new magazine that holds 10 more rounds!

Buttstocks

We chose the Magpul UBR ($265) and STR ($99.95) buttstocks based on our personal preferences. Both stocks offer a comfortably slanted cheek weld, internal storage and integrated QD sling swivels, and are supremely durable.
